Watering Schedule for St. Augustine Grass in Central Texas

St. Augustine needs more water than Bermuda or Zoysia, and Austin heat makes timing critical. A realistic watering schedule for new and established lawns.

St. Augustine is the most water-hungry of the three grass types we sell, which means it’s also the one most likely to show stress — or disease — if the watering schedule is off. In Central Texas summers, “off” usually means one of two things: not enough water, or watering at the wrong time of day. Both cause real problems, just different ones.

Here’s how to get it right, whether you just had sod installed or you’re maintaining an established lawn.

New Sod: The First 2–3 Weeks Are Everything

Fresh-cut St. Augustine sod hasn’t rooted into the soil yet, which means it can dry out and die in a matter of hours during a Central Texas summer if it’s neglected. For the first 2–3 weeks after installation, or until the roots take hold:

  • Water twice a day — once in the early morning and once in the evening, never during midday heat
  • Keep the soil consistently moist 2–3 inches down (not soaked, not dry — think “wrung-out sponge”)
  • Avoid foot traffic while it’s establishing

Test rooting by gently tugging a corner of the sod. Once it resists, the roots have taken hold and you can slow down to your normal established schedule.

Established St. Augustine: Weekly Totals

Once your St. Augustine lawn is rooted and established, the goal shifts from “keep it constantly moist” to “deep, less frequent watering” that encourages roots to grow deeper into the soil.

  • Spring and fall: about 1 inch of water per week, in one or two sessions
  • Peak summer (95°F+): increase to 1–1.5 inches per week, split into two sessions to avoid runoff on Austin’s clay soils
  • Winter: minimal watering — St. Augustine is semi-dormant and doesn’t need much

The simplest gut-check is the finger test: stick a finger into the soil. If it comes out with mud stuck to it, skip watering that day. If the ground feels dry and hard a couple inches down, it’s time to run the sprinklers.

Always Water Early Morning

This is the single most important rule for St. Augustine in Central Texas, and it’s the one homeowners get wrong most often. Water between 5–10am, never in the evening. Austin’s humidity means grass that stays wet overnight is far more prone to fungal disease — particularly gray leaf spot and brown patch, both of which are common problems on St. Augustine lawns here. Watering in the middle of the day isn’t great either — a lot of it evaporates before it soaks in, and on newly laid sod, direct sun on wet blades can scorch the grass.

Watch for Local Watering Restrictions

Austin and most surrounding Central Texas cities enforce mandatory outdoor watering restrictions tied to your street address, and the specific days and rules can change with drought conditions — check with your city or water utility for the current schedule before you set your sprinkler timer. Most utilities also offer a temporary watering exception for newly installed sod, since the twice-a-day schedule above doesn’t fit a once-or-twice-a-week restriction. It’s usually a quick request through your water provider, and it’s worth doing before your sod is delivered so you’re not caught off guard in the first critical weeks.

Signs Your Watering Schedule Needs Adjusting

  • Grayish-blue tint and footprints that don’t spring back — classic signs of underwatering. Water deeply within 24–48 hours.
  • Yellowing with a spongy feel underfoot — often overwatering, especially in cooler months when St. Augustine needs less. Cut back and let it dry out between waterings.
  • Circular brown patches — usually brown patch fungus, tied to evening watering or excess moisture. See our Lawn Care Guide for treatment steps, and consider a preventive application of MicroLife Brown Patch 5-1-3 before the fall fungal season starts.
