How to Prepare Your Yard Before Laying Sod — Austin Guide

Most sod installation failures come down to one thing: poor yard preparation. The grass itself is fine — it’s what’s underneath that determines whether it takes root fast or sits there struggling for months. Here’s what we tell every customer before their delivery.

Step 1: Remove the Old Grass (If Any)

If you’re replacing an existing lawn, you need to get the old grass out before the new sod goes down. There are a few ways to do this:

Sod cutter — rents from most equipment rental stores, cuts the old turf into strips you can roll up and remove. Clean and efficient.

Herbicide (glyphosate) — spray the existing lawn, wait 1–2 weeks for everything to die, then till it under. More work but works well on heavy, established turf.

Tilling without killing first — not recommended. You’ll turn up live grass pieces that can re-sprout under your new sod and cause patchy regrowth. Kill it first, then till.

If you’re laying on bare dirt (new construction), skip this step — you’re already ahead.

Step 2: Address Your Soil — This Is the Critical Step in Central Texas

Much of the Austin area has heavy clay soil, and new construction lots are often worse — compacted fill clay with almost no organic matter. Sod can technically grow in straight clay, but it roots slowly, drains poorly, and doesn’t establish well.

The fix: spread 2–4 inches of enriched topsoil over your yard before the sod goes down. Rake it level, then lay the sod on top.

This isn’t optional for new construction lots. It’s the step that determines how your first season goes. On an existing lawn with decent native soil, you can skip it, but on bare builder fill — don’t skip it.

Step 3: Grade and Level the Surface

Before sod goes down, the surface needs to be roughly level. You’re not looking for a putting green, but you want to:

• Fill in any low spots (they become soggy areas under sod)
• Remove any high spots (they dry out faster and can leave the sod level with the surface)
• Slope the grade away from the house — at least 2% grade so water drains away from the foundation

Use a rake to level out the area after you’ve spread your topsoil. This is also the time to fix any drainage issues — if water pools in your yard, deal with that before sod, not after.

Step 4: Don’t Till After You Level

A common mistake: till the area right before laying sod. This leaves the soil loose, and when you walk on it with fresh sod rolls, you sink in and leave footprints that turn into low spots. If you’ve tilled or spread topsoil, let it settle for a day or two before the sod goes down, or lightly compact with a roller.

Step 5: Lay the Sod as Fast as Possible After Delivery

Sod is perishable. Once it leaves the farm and gets stacked on a pallet, the clock starts. In the Texas heat, sod that sits on the pallet in the summer sun starts to degrade quickly — yellow, then dead.

Have your yard prepped and ready before the sod is delivered. As soon as it arrives, start laying. If you have more than you can install in a day, keep unused pallets in the shade and water them to keep them moist.

Step 6: Water, Water, Water (For the First Two Weeks)

Newly installed sod needs consistent moisture while it’s establishing root contact. For the first 10–14 days:

• Water once or twice a day — morning watering is most efficient
• The soil should stay consistently moist 2–3 inches down
• Avoid heavy foot traffic until the sod has rooted (you can test by tugging on a corner — if it resists, it’s rooting)

After two weeks, taper to a normal watering schedule.
