Most of the Austin area sits in USDA hardiness zone 8b, which means long, hot summers, mild winters, and stretches of 100°F-plus days where a lawn either holds up or falls apart. The grass variety you pick matters more here than almost anywhere else in the country — the wrong choice means a brown, stressed yard by July.
We get asked “what’s the best grass for Austin” almost every day. The honest answer is: it depends on your sun exposure and how much water you’re willing to put into it. Here’s how the three main options actually compare.
Bermuda — Best for Full Sun and Drought Tolerance
Bermuda is the most drought-tolerant grass we sell, and it’s the default choice for full-sun Austin yards with no tree cover. It needs 6–8 hours of direct sun minimum — put it in shade and it will thin out and die within a season or two.
TifTuf Bermuda is our top recommendation if water efficiency is the priority. It uses roughly 38% less water than standard Bermuda varieties and still greens up fast in spring. Celebration Bermuda is a step up in color and shade tolerance (relatively speaking — it still wants a lot of sun) and is common on higher-end Austin lawns. Tifway 419 is the classic golf-course-density option if you want the tightest, most durable turf and don’t mind a bit more maintenance.
All Bermuda varieties go fully dormant and turn straw-brown in winter, then green back up in spring. That’s normal — it’s not dying, it’s just how the grass survives Central Texas cold snaps.
St. Augustine — Best for Yards with Some Shade
St. Augustine is the most popular grass in Austin overall, mostly because so many Austin lots have at least partial tree cover, and St. Augustine tolerates shade far better than Bermuda. It’s a broader-bladed, denser grass that establishes fast and handles our clay soils well.
Raleigh St. Augustine is the standard choice for full-sun to lightly-shaded yards — it’s reliable, affordable, and the best value for a large resod. Palmetto St. Augustine is the upgrade for yards with a genuine mix of sun and shade, with a finer blade and better shade performance. Amerishade St. Augustine is a specialty option for deep shade under mature oak canopy, where almost nothing else will grow.
St. Augustine’s tradeoff is water. It needs more consistent moisture than Bermuda or Zoysia and is more prone to fungal issues like brown patch and gray leaf spot if it’s watered incorrectly (evening watering is the usual culprit — always water in the early morning here).
Zoysia — Best Low-Maintenance, Heat-Tolerant Option
Zoysia splits the difference: it handles Austin heat and drought nearly as well as Bermuda, tolerates more shade than Bermuda does, and requires less mowing and fertilizer than St. Augustine. The tradeoff is a slower establishment period — Zoysia takes longer to fill in than the other two.
Palisades Zoysia is our best-selling overall grass in the Austin market for a reason — it handles clay soil, takes moderate shade, and holds up to heat and cold both. It’s a genuine “set it and forget it” lawn once established. Zeon Zoysia has the finest, softest texture of the bunch (a favorite for yards where kids and pets go barefoot) and the best shade tolerance of any Zoysia we carry. Emerald Zoysia is the showcase-lawn option — ultra-fine blade, deep color, premium curb appeal. Palisades and Zeon also proved themselves in the February 2021 winter freeze, coming through with less damage than most other warm-season grasses in the area.
