Palisades wants a good amount of sun — 6-7 hours — but otherwise it’s remarkably forgiving. Its deep root system handles both the limestone-heavy Hill Country soils and the Blackland clay found elsewhere around Austin, and it’s one of the more pet-friendly options on our list thanks to its combination of high traffic tolerance and soft texture.
Recommended Mowing Height & Frequency
Mow Palisades at 1.5–2.5 inches, every 7–10 days. A standard rotary mower works fine as long as the blade is sharp — this is one of Palisades’ biggest advantages over Emerald Zoysia, which really wants a reel mower for best results. Because Zoysia in general grows more slowly than Bermuda, it’s more forgiving if you’re a week late on a mow, but stick to the one-third rule regardless.
Watering Needs
Once established, Palisades needs deep, infrequent watering — about 1 inch per week in summer, ½ inch in spring and fall. Cap watering at twice per week maximum once established; overwatering Zoysia is the leading cause of large patch disease, the #1 Zoysia problem we see in Central Texas lawns. New sod needs twice-daily watering — once in the morning, once in the evening, never during midday heat — for 2–3 weeks (Zoysia roots more slowly than Bermuda or St. Augustine, so expect to need the full 3 weeks — be patient), then transition to the established schedule once a tug test confirms rooting.
Fertilizing & MicroLife Recommendations
Zoysia needs the least fertilizer of any grass we carry — just 1-2 lbs of nitrogen per 1,000 sq ft annually. Over-fertilizing causes excessive thatch buildup and increases disease risk, so resist the urge to feed it as often as you would Bermuda. MicroLife Multi-Purpose 6-2-4 at a light rate is plenty during the growing season, and a potassium-heavy application in fall helps strengthen roots before winter. First fertilizer after new sod installation should wait 30-45 days, applied at half rate.
