Zeon’s 3-4 hour sun minimum makes it one of the most shade-tolerant grasses we sell, rivaling Amerishade St. Augustine while offering much better foot traffic tolerance and drought resistance. Recommended Mowing Height & Frequency
Mow Zeon at 1–2 inches, every 7–10 days. Unlike Emerald, a standard rotary mower works fine here as long as the blades stay sharp — you don’t need to invest in a reel mower to get good results. Because it’s a Zoysia, it grows more slowly than Bermuda, so it’s more forgiving if your mowing schedule slips by a few days.
Watering Needs
Zeon needs deep, infrequent watering once established — about 1 inch per week in summer. Its high drought tolerance means it handles missed watering cycles better than most grasses on our list, but avoid the temptation to overwater; like all Zoysia, too-frequent watering increases the risk of large patch disease. Cap watering at twice weekly once established.
Fertilizing & MicroLife Recommendations
Zeon has the lowest fertilizer needs of any grass we carry — resist the urge to feed it like a Bermuda lawn. A light application of MicroLife Multi-Purpose 6-2-4 once or twice during the growing season is typically sufficient, with a potassium-heavy fall feeding to support root strength before winter. Its disease resistance means you’re less likely to need MicroLife Brown Patch than with St. Augustine varieties, but it’s a good preventive option in September regardless.
