Not everyone wants to spend their weekends on lawn care. If you’d rather set a schedule and mostly leave it alone, all three of our low-maintenance picks happen to be Zoysia varieties — here’s how they compare.
Palisades Zoysia — Best All-Around Low-Maintenance Choice
Palisades is Austin’s best-selling, best-looking overall low-maintenance grass, according to local turf experts. It works fine with a regular rotary mower (no special equipment needed), has excellent cold tolerance — it held up through the 2021 freeze better than most other Zoysia — and its deep root system handles drought and Austin’s clay/rocky soils without constant babysitting.
- Maintenance level: Low
- Mow height: 1.5-2.5 inches, every 7-10 days
- Best for: homeowners who want the easiest possible all-around lawn
Emerald Zoysia — The Showcase Look, With a Catch
Emerald has the finest blade and deepest emerald color of anything we sell — it’s the “showcase front yard” grass. It genuinely needs mowing less often than the others (lowest mowing frequency on our list), but there’s a tradeoff: it requires a reel mower for best results (a rotary mower will shred it rather than cut it cleanly), and it’s the most prone to heavy thatch buildup of any grass we carry, so budget for occasional dethatching.
- Maintenance level: Low (but reel mower + dethatching needed)
- Mow height: 0.5-1 inch, every 5-7 days
- Best for: premium, low-traffic front yards where you want the best possible look
Zeon Zoysia — Lowest Fertilizer Needs
Zeon needs the least fertilizer of anything we carry, on top of being low-maintenance overall. It also happens to be highly shade tolerant (needs just 3-4 hours of sun) and handles heavy foot traffic and pets well — a rare combination of “low effort” and “still holds up to real use.”
- Maintenance level: Low
- Mow height: 1-2 inches, every 7-10 days
- Best for: low-effort yards that still see kids, pets, or shade
Quick Comparison
| Variety | Mow Frequency | Fertilizer Needs | Special Equipment |
|---|---|---|---|
| Emerald Zoysia | Every 5-7 days | Standard | Reel mower recommended |
| Palisades Zoysia | Every 7-10 days | Standard | None |
| Zeon Zoysia | Every 7-10 days | Lowest of all varieties | None |
Why Zoysia Wins on Low Maintenance
Zoysia as a species grows slower than St. Augustine or Bermuda, which is exactly what makes it lower-maintenance — less mowing, less clipping cleanup, and (per the University turf research behind Zoysia’s popularity) it out-competes weeds well once established because of its dense growth habit, reducing the need for herbicide application.
The tradeoff is a slower initial establishment after installation — Zoysia takes longer to fill in than Bermuda — so be patient in the first season.
A Low-Effort Fertilizing Schedule
Even low-maintenance grass needs some feeding. For any of these three, MicroLife Multi-Purpose 6-2-4 applied 2-3 times during the growing season (spring, mid-summer, early fall) is typically enough — don’t over-fertilize Zoysia, since it increases thatch buildup and disease risk without meaningfully improving the lawn.
