TifTuf Bermuda Grass Care Guide for Austin Lawns

If there’s one grass built for Austin’s water reality, it’s TifTuf Bermuda. University of Georgia research found it uses 38% less water than standard Bermuda, and it’s the fastest-establishing Bermuda on the market — roots in under 7 days. For drought-prone Central Texas summers and increasingly common water restrictions, it’s become one of our most requested varieties.

Overview

TifTuf was bred specifically for water efficiency without sacrificing the density and traffic tolerance Bermuda is known for. It also has the best cold tolerance and earliest spring green-up of any Bermuda we carry — a real advantage after a hard Texas winter when you want your lawn green again before everyone else’s.

TifTuf tolerates more shade than Tifway 419 while still handling high foot traffic — a genuinely useful middle ground. Its very high drought tolerance and 38% water savings make it the practical choice for new construction and any property where summer water restrictions are a real concern, which is increasingly the case across the Austin metro.

Mow TifTuf at 1–2 inches, every 5–7 days during the growing season. For the first mow after new sod installation, set the mower high (2–2.5 inches) and gradually bring the height down over the following cuts rather than scalping it immediately — TifTuf roots so fast that it’s tempting to treat it like established turf too soon. Like other Bermudas, it can be scalped in early spring to clear dormant growth and speed up green-up.

Watering Needs

This is TifTuf’s whole selling point: it needs roughly 1 inch of water per week — and because of its 38% water savings over standard Bermuda, you can often push that schedule further than you would with Celebration or Tifway 419. New sod still needs twice-daily watering — once in the morning, once in the evening, never during midday heat — for 2–3 weeks to establish (TifTuf’s rapid rooting means it may be ready to slow down closer to the 2-week mark — tug-test to confirm), but once rooted, TifTuf is the most forgiving grass on our list if you miss a watering cycle during a hot Austin summer.

Fertilizing & MicroLife Recommendations

TifTuf’s medium maintenance rating means it needs less babying than Tifway 419, but it still benefits from a solid feeding program. MicroLife Hybrid 20-0-5 is our go-to recommendation — the high-nitrogen formula supports TifTuf’s naturally fast growth and helps it hold its early spring green-up advantage. Apply every 4-6 weeks May through August, and stop nitrogen by end of August so new growth hardens off before winter.

Pros & Cons

Pros:

  • Uses 38% less water than standard Bermuda (UGA-proven)
  • Fastest-rooting Bermuda — under 7 days
  • Best cold tolerance and earliest spring green-up
  • High drought tolerance for Central Texas summers

Cons:

  • Still needs regular mowing during peak growth
  • Full dormancy (brown) in winter like all Bermuda

Is TifTuf Right for You?

If water efficiency is a priority — whether because of summer restrictions, a high water bill, or just wanting a lawn that survives a dry Texas August without babying — TifTuf is the clear choice among our Bermuda varieties. It’s also an excellent pick for new construction lots where fast establishment matters.
