Shade is one of the toughest conditions for grass — most turfgrass evolved to compete in full sun, and shaded lawns are the #1 reason we hear “nothing will grow here.” The truth is a few varieties are specifically bred to handle it well. Here’s how to pick the right one for how much shade you actually have.
How Much Shade Do You Have?
Before picking a variety, estimate your daily direct sunlight:
- 4-5 hours of direct sun: moderate shade — most options below will thrive
- 3 hours or less, dappled light under mature oaks or heavy tree cover: deep shade — only one variety we sell is built for this
Palmetto St. Augustine — Best for Moderate Shade
Palmetto needs only 4-5 hours of sun and is the standard upgrade pick for mixed sun/shade Austin yards — yards with some tree cover but not deep, constant shade. It has a finer blade and darker color than standard St. Augustine, with better shade performance. Drought tolerance is medium-high once established, and foot traffic tolerance is low-medium, so it’s best for yards that aren’t seeing heavy daily activity.
- Mow height: 3-4 inches
- Mow frequency: every 7-10 days
- Best for: yards with partial tree canopy, want a nicer-looking upgrade over standard St. Augustine
Amerishade St. Augustine — Best for Deep Shade
Amerishade is the deepest shade-tolerant grass we carry, needing as little as 3 hours of direct sun. It’s specifically designed for ornamental shaded zones — under mature live oaks, north-facing side yards, areas where other grasses have already failed. Growth is slow and foot traffic tolerance is low, so think of this as a specialty shade solution rather than a general lawn grass for an active yard.
- Mow height: 3.5-4 inches
- Mow frequency: every 7-10 days
- Best for: deeply shaded ornamental areas where nothing else has worked
Zeon Zoysia — Best Shade-Tolerant Non-St. Augustine Option
If you want something other than St. Augustine, Zeon Zoysia has the highest shade tolerance of any non-St. Augustine grass we sell — it needs just 3-4 hours of sun. It was used at Bluejack National (Tiger Woods’s Montgomery, TX course) and the golf course for the 2016 Rio Olympics. Unlike the St. Augustine shade options, Zeon also handles high foot traffic and pets well, with a soft, barefoot-friendly texture and the lowest fertilizer needs of any grass we carry.
- Mow height: 1-2 inches
- Mow frequency: every 7-10 days
- Best for: shaded yards that still see regular foot traffic, pets, or bare feet
Quick Comparison
| Variety | Min. Sun Needed | Foot Traffic | Maintenance |
|---|---|---|---|
| Amerishade St. Augustine | 3 hrs | Low | Medium |
| Zeon Zoysia | 3-4 hrs | High | Low |
| Palmetto St. Augustine | 4-5 hrs | Low-Medium | Medium |
A Note on Shade Fertilizing
Shaded grass grows slower and needs less nitrogen than full-sun grass — over-fertilizing shaded areas encourages thin, leggy growth that’s more disease-prone. Use MicroLife Multi-Purpose 6-2-4 at a reduced rate in shaded zones rather than your full-sun feeding schedule.
